Food for Thought- the KFC Connection

May 5th, 2010

It seems that the Komen for the Cure organization has joined with Kentucky Fried Chicken to raise funds for their organization. Just because they both happen to have the same initials  doesn’t make this a good match. The truth is that eating animals has been proven to cause many serious health risks, such as all sorts of cancer including breast cancer, heart attacks and diabetes. One of my favorite groups, Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine, advocates for a vegan lifestyle, fights for healthier school lunches, and has found that grilled chicken is a carcinogen.

Dr. Neal Barnard, Founder & President of PCRM, writes about the chemistry that causes cancer in grilled chicken, which, of course, is now being sold in pink (the breast cancer color) buckets. “Testing revealed that every piece of the new grilled chicken products from KFC contained substantial amounts of PhIP, a chemical formed in meats that are grilled, pan-fried, barbecued or otherwise heated to a sufficient degree. PhIP is linked to numerous cancers in humans, including breast, colon, and prostate. Smaller amounts of MeIQx, which has been linked to cancers of the colon and lung, were also found in every piece. Some pieces of chicken also contained smaller amounts of MeIQ and IQ.” – Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. This is like the American Lung Association teaming with J.R. Reynolds, the cigarette maker, to raise funds. Please be smarter than the Komen Foundation and skip the meats. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits and exercise regularly. Keep your weight down and your hopes up!

    About
As anyone who knows me knows, I have a lot of opinions and I need a place to express them. I want to make it creative, interesting, and personal. I want to share what I love and what I despise. I am interested in politics, the arts, environmental issues, human and animal issues and deeply appreciate humor. This is a work in progress, just like myself.
