Thanksgiving: A Celebration of Genocide
Elephantjournal.comBy Gary Smith

Thanksgiving is the celebration of a dual genocide: one against native people, and one against turkeys.
The first Thanksgiving Day celebration in 1637 was proclaimed by the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, not as a festival of the Pilgrims and Indians sharing a meal to celebrate the cooperation between the two communities, but as a celebration of the massacre of 700 Pequot men, women and children. Skin Trade is a new and compelling documentary about the fur trade directed by my friend, Shannon Keith. To be honest, I cannot watch this film but I am not one who needs to. I have been protesting the making and wearing of fur since the early ’70′s and I am very upset and disheartened to see this product of immense cruelty, suffering and murder still be worn. How anyone can think they look beautiful wearing a tortured, murdered animal is beyond me! If you still think fur is pretty, classy, or necessary, you MUST watch this film! Continue reading »
Fish: the forgotten victims on our plate

When I was a child, my father used to take me for walks, often along a river or by the sea. We would pass people fishing, perhaps reeling in their lines with struggling fish hooked at the end of them. Once I saw a man take a small fish out of a bucket and impale it, still wriggling, on an empty hook to use as bait. Continue reading »

I just learned from my dear friend and Japanese translator, Masako Maxwell, that last week-end marked the Eighth Annual VegefoodFesta in Tokyo, Japan at Yoyogi Park. Attracting nearly 40,000 people, it is one of the largest vegetarian festivals in the world and is organized by Veggie Culture Network on a not-for-profit basis. The VFF features a wide variety of vegan food, and hosts 100 vendors and exhibitors, including vegetarian, macrobiotic and raw food restaurants, selected organic vegetable vendors and shops handling organic goods. They even ask people to bring their own chopsticks and bowls to be more environmentally friendly. Continue reading »

Please don’t think this is good news: A baby orca was born on Oct. 9 to Katina, a 34-year-old orca in Sea World Orlando. This is her seventh baby. Continue reading »

This article from the LA Times by Steve Lopez is the most personal and powerful of all that I have read on this dreadful proposition 23 here in California. I feel very strongly about defeating this proposition as it is an attempt to roll back environmental protections that we, the California voters, have passed. I so appreciate when others use their voices for the unfortunate & forgotten among us and Alicia Rivera is a voice to be reckoned with and I am so grateful. I truly believe that defeating Prop 23 will be the most decisive act, for all living beings in California, as we all depend on clean air, water and land. It will also send a message that we Californians cannot be bought out by big businesses. So please VOTE DEMOCRATIC & VOTE NO on PROP 23! Continue reading »
President Clinton’s New & Improved Diet
Faced with heart health problems and his daughter Chelsea’s imminent wedding, President Clinton decided to change his diet and lose weight. He lost 25 pounds and has basically become a , yes, vegan! Except for the ocassional, unfortunate fish (I’ll refrain from any joke here), he no longer eats meat or dairy and he talks about how the body can heal itself by keeping to a plant-based diet. Wealth, not poverty, is the driver of elephant killings
ElephantVoices
September 14, 2010
The ivory trade is, once again, the biggest direct threat to the welfare and survival of elephants. Between now and the 16th Conference of the Parties in Bangkok in 2013, ElephantVoices will be working hard on messaging: We want the people who might be tempted to buy ivory to make the connection between their purchase and the deaths of individuals. The OnionJune 2, 2010
Topsy charms the crowd with a “silly hula dance” that he has been conditioned to fear performing incorrectly.
TUCSON, AZ—Cheers, laughter, and applause filled the big top tent at the Ringling Bros. Circus Saturday as children of all ages were captivated by the savage enslavement of Topsy the elephant. Continue reading »
